My chat with Jake Humphrey (memento mori)

I bumped into former BT Sport presenter, and High Performance Founder and Podcast host Jake Humphrey at an event last week.  He was fresh off the stage after giving an inspiring talk to more than 1,200 business owners.

As we had a brief chat, I noticed his tattoo, which simply said: memento mori, a Latin phrase meaning remember you must die.

I referred to his tattoo and told him I have a coin with that exact phrase on; he said he’d have loved to see it but had to dash.

Remember you must die may sound like an odd phrase and an awful idea...

But it’s NOT meant to be maudlin or morbid. I mean, who wants to think about death?

No, this is to remind you there is LIFE and to live it to the fullest...

To help you figure out what you WANT in Life...

And what goals you need to FOCUS on to achieve that.

It’s about taking action and making the MOST of the time you have – not needlessly wasting it.

My coin sits on my desk, or when I am out, I carry it around in my pocket so it’s a constant reminder that time is precious and having it on my person every single day genuinely helps me focus.

Memento mori has been such a big part of my life and my philosophy, that the first three Steps of our 9 Step Fix Build Sell Blueprint, focus on exactly this:

  • Step 1: Understand what you want, and what you’re prepared to do, to get it (Life Plan)

  • Step 2: Understand your business's financial position, and how to deliver your Life Plan (the Numbers)

  • Step 3: Identify the most effective way to deliver the numbers (the Path)

I hope this inspires and encourages you to reflect on how to live your life to the fullest, what you need to do to start making this happen, and who/what is going to get you to act on this so that it becomes a daily habit.
