Bah humbug to Entrepreneurs’ Day
It’s Entrepreneurs’ Day today, but I’m NOT celebrating it.
Before you accuse me of going all Ebenezer Scrooge on you, hear me out…
Personally, for me, today shouldn’t be called Entrepreneurs’ Day. It should be named Counter Culture Day, and this is what I WILL be celebrating today.
A day marked to encourage people to swim against the tide of normality.
A day of choosing to do something different.
A day for challenging the norms of the majority.
‘Entrepreneurs’ Day’ originally focused on freedom: Freedom to explore one’s potential…Freedom to create one’s Self…Freedom of personal expression…Freedom from scheduling…Freedom from rigidly defined roles and hierarchical statuses…
Is this not the attitude of the successful entrepreneur; to look at the majority and do the opposite?
To study the majorities and take a different approach, to deliberately NOT conform to how people expect them to?
Some may call these people mavericks, renegades, or other “dangerous” titles. Me, I just think they are smart!
Mark Twain summed it up perfectly:
“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”
And George Bernard Shaw:
“The minority is sometimes right; the majority always wrong.”
So, my challenge to you all today is to disturb the comfortable and do the opposite of your competitors, because by definition, they are in the majority.
Have a great Counter Culture Day….
