The discovery of the Entrepreneurs Gene
I recently made a purchase which has changed the way people perceive me.
Firstly, let me explain it has not changed me, but it has on how others see me. The same happens when a business wins an award. The business is still the same, BUT others perceive it to be different.
This is a really important distinction and it manifested itself at a recent event I attended. The event was an intimate evening gathering focused around an interview with Martyn Dawes, the guy that sold his business to Costa Coffee for several million.
I found myself in a small group of people; some of them I knew, which meant others I didn’t, so the standard ‘what do you do?’question was asked.
What followed was quite a humbling exchange. As soon as I mentioned my name, one of the attendees said, ‘didn’t you write that book about not working Fridays?’. Before I could answer, another guest started to tell my life story (from the book) and in some detail. It felt like I was watching a TV mini-series with me being the actor. Quite worrying this guy seemed to know more about me than I felt comfortable with.
People that really know me; know how I hate this type of attention, and that I’m not very comfortable telling you this, but what happened next got very interesting
It was one of those throw-away comments made by one of the groups that intrigued me to the way people think. He said: ‘but I bet you were born that way’. I had to do a double take and ask him to explain what he meant. His response was very telling: ‘some people; no matter what they do, if they fall in sh*t they come up smelling of roses’.
I knew from his tone he meant no harm by it, but he really did believe that life happens to us – not for us.
I recounted the story of the two wolves, I am sure you have heard it.
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.”
He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”
The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.
Now the spotlight was definitely on me and I went into coach mode (my happy place) and said that there is a formula which is the closest thing I have discovered that will give you every chance of succeeding at whatever you do.
‘Do you want me to tell you about it?’ OK, it was a bit of a leading question as who wouldn’t want to know if something like this really existed
I grabbed a serviette and drew a diagram explaining how ATTITUDE will literally change your life and give you more control than you ever realised.
Because almost everything we do every day is done from HABIT. We learn to do things and they become HABITS. At an early age, we formed the habits of walking, talking, riding a bicycle, tying our shoes and hundreds of other things. Now, these things are automatic and reflexive. We often talk about habits as being bad because we tend to focus on our negative habits, but the truth is that the overwhelming majority of your habits are good habits that make us productive. It has been said that first, you make your habits and then your habits make – or break – you.
If we agree habits are so important, let’s look at how they are formed and how they can be changed. How did you get to think, act and behave the way you do in the first place? You were not born with it!
For me, the degrees of SUCCESS that we enjoy in life depends on the RESULTS that we produce. The greater the RESULTS, the greater our SUCCESS. The RESULTS we produce are the consequence of our BEHAVIOUR or the way we ACT. Our BEHAVIOUR reflects our ATTITUDE, the way we habitually think. In fact, “HABIT OF THOUGHT” is a perfect description of what an ATTITUDE is. Our ATTITUDES or Habits of Thought are the results of our CONDITIONING.
Conditioning is just another word for HABIT. We have all been conditioned to think, act and behave in certain ways by family, friends, teachers and others who have influenced us throughout our lives.
Finally, our CONDITIONING was caused by the REPETITION of certain ideas and actions over an extended period of time. I call this SPACED REPETITION because it occurs over and over with intervals of time in between.
Are you still with me? Can I suggest you read this again 🙂
Now here’s the really exciting part…If this is the process that has brought us to where we are today, it means that we can use this same process to determine how we will live in the future. In other words. If we reverse it and use the SPACED REPETITION of powerful ideas and actions, we can change our CONDITIONING process so that our Habits of Thought, our ATTITUDES, change too. The change in ATTITUDE will bring about changes in BEHAVIOUR and the RESULTS we achieve will improve and grow in significance. With improved RESULTS, the quality and quantity of the SUCCESS we enjoy will also increase.
Think about that idea for a moment. See how what I’ve just told you makes it possible for you to work the formula and increase your SUCCESS significantly.
To finish my impromptu, intimate coaching session I explained that too many people focus on the result and don’t understand the process to get there. Just like a golfer trying to hit the ball harder. When it’s actually the process of the swing that gets the result. Get that right and the rest will take care of itself.
See there is no such thing as a Success or an Entrepreneurs gene, but there is a very simple process to the success we get; understanding it means we can control it.
Here’s to your continued success…
