Why I’m not celebrating Entrepreneurs’ Day
It’s another one of those ‘Days’ today, celebrated internationally with hashtags galore.
And today’s dedication is ‘Entrepreneurs’ Day’.
Don’t get me wrong, I love an excuse to celebrate something – especially all those brilliant minds that have changed the way we live our lives and shaped our futures.
But, for me, today shouldn’t be called Entrepreneurs’ Day. It should be called Counter Culture Day. And it’s this day that I will be celebrating.
- A day marked to encourage people to swim against the tide of normality
- A day of choosing to do something different.
- A day for challenging the norms of the majority.
Originally this initiative heralded from the 60?s and focused on freedom…Freedom to explore one’s potential. Freedom to create one’s Self. Freedom of personal expression. Freedom from scheduling. Freedom from rigidly defined roles and hierarchical statuses…
Is this not the attitude of the successful entrepreneur; to look at the majority and do the opposite?
To study the majorities marketing and take a different approach, and to purposely NOT to conform to how people expect them to?
Some may call these people mavericks, renegades, or other “dangerous” titles. Me, I just think they are smart!
Mark Twain summed it up perfectly:
“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”
And George Bernard Shaw
“The minority is sometimes right; the majority always wrong.
So, my challenge to you all today is to disturb the comfortable and do the opposite of your competitors, because by definition, they are in the majority.
Have a great Counter Culture Day….
