25 years!!!!
It’s my birthday at the weekend. I’d usually be wondering:
How on earth have I got to this age?
Do James & Lily think I’m really old, like I did my parents?
Where is time going?
Am I where I thought I would be?
BUT this year, I’m not.
I’m too busy planning more bucket list trips with client & friend Keith’s Bucket List Company, booking concerts, signing up to experiences with the family, researching what to learn next.
Basically, what haven’t I done yet that I really want to?
You see, I was recently chatting to a friend and he’d been feeling that same sense of life slipping away.
That was until he’d had a chat with his dad, who confessed that at the age of around 72 he’d felt a significant slowdown and couldn’t quite do many of the things he’d taken for granted.
So, my new mindset is really liberating and exciting – I’ve worked out I have an incredible 25 years to plan and do all those things I’ve wanted to do but have never got around to!
And this all has to fit around our business without busting a gut, feeling overwhelmed or guilty, or compromising the bank balance.
It’s the difference between a Fixed Mindset and a Growth Mindset, which Professor Carol Dweck summarises brilliantly:
Fixed Mindset – you believe that your ability is set in stone and where you are now will likely predict where you are in the future.
Growth Mindset – you believe your ability can change and grow and it would be impossible to predict what you or someone else could achieve.
We are neither one nor the other, instead, we are largely a mixture of the two. Our job is to be aware of our mindset and gravitate towards growth.
The key to success when getting your business ready for scale, and throughout the entire scale journey, is to have a Growth Mindset. Without this, you will remain stagnant at best.
Answer me truthfully (I’d genuinely LOVE you to email your responses to me at blog@myadvocatementor.com):
- What mindset do you think you’re at right now?
- Do you have the tools/support to move from one to another?
