Why I’m not wishing you a happy National Entrepreneurs’ Day
Today is officially hailed National Entrepreneurs’ Day, an initiative that celebrates the American men and women who promote entrepreneurship, business, innovation, and new jobs. It’s now recognised across the globe.
That’s you and me right? So why are we not joining in these celebrations?
Here at Advocate, we are celebrating today as what we like to call Counter Culture Day. A day marked to encourage people to swim against the tide of normality, choosing to do something different and therefore challenging the norms of the majority.
Originally this initiative heralded from the 60?s and focused on freedom…… freedom to explore one’s potential, freedom to create one’s Self, freedom of personal expression, freedom from scheduling, freedom from rigidly defined roles and hierarchical statuses…
Is this not the attitude of the successful entrepreneur; to look at the majority and do the opposite, to study the majorities marketing and take a different approach and to purposely NOT conform to how people expect them to?
Some may call these people mavericks, renegades, or other “dangerous” titles, we just think they are smart!
Mark Twain summed it up perfectly:
“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”
As did George Bernard Shaw:
“The minority is sometimes right; the majority always wrong.”
So our challenge to you all today is to disturb the comfortable and do the opposite of your competitors, because by definition they are in the majority.
Have a very happy Counter Culture Day!
